TOURISM

HISTORIC BOUTIQUE HOTELS

Heaven on Earth truly exists, and it's called Sao Tome and Principe.

This destination is an authentic treasure, waiting to be discovered. The culture, history, gastronomy, and people are undoubtedly the most valuable jewels of Sao Tome and Principe.

This African archipelago is also blessed by nature - located on the equator, it boasts a hot and humid climate, which combined with the volcanic and fertile soil, gives rise to magnificent and dense tropical forests extending from turquoise beaches to the highest mountains, and magical waterfalls.

Talking about the history of Sao Tome and Principe also means talking about the "roças." These were built during the Portuguese colonial era, and housed populations brought to these territories to work in hard and iniquitous conditions. In the 19th and early 20th century, Sao Tome and Principe was one of the world's largest cocoa producers. Over the years, the rainforest has eroded many of these historical and architectural riches. Of the more than 200 "roças" that initially existed in the country, only a few dozen have survived. An interesting fact about these "roças" is that each one was responsible for different plantations that still remain, such as vanilla, cocoa, coffee, pepper, and others, thanks to the efforts of the local population and the growth of family farming. The "roças" are all unique and spread across the islands of the archipelago. What they have in common is that they are now in ruins, located on immense land filled with dense forest, and with access to beautiful hidden beaches, many of them private.

The Government of Sao Tome and Principe and the Consulate in Canada are committed to recovering this historic heritage. We present private investors with the opportunity to develop boutique hotels in each "roça." These historic buildings will each tell their own story and offer differentiated and exclusive experiences for their guests. State "roças" are available for private investors to explore a piece of paradise.

Please contact us for more details about the Tourism Project for the rehabilitation of the "roças" in Sao Tome and Principe.
